In 2026, car manufacturers (OEMs) are fighting for control over the repair process. This has led to the rise of Certified Repair Networks, and some 2026 insurance policies are now “incentivizing” (or forcing) you to use them.

The Warranty Conflict

  • The Tech Lockdown: Many 2026 vehicles require proprietary software to “handshake” with new parts. If you take your car to a local “unauthorized” body shop, they may physically fix the car but be unable to turn off the dashboard warning lights because they lack the manufacturer’s digital keys.
  • Policy Penalties: Some 2026 “Value” policies include a clause stating they will only pay the “prevailing rate” of their network. If you insist on a different shop, you may be stuck paying the $40–$60 per hour labor differenceout of your own pocket.
  • Safety First: Insurers argue that only certified shops have the laser-leveling floors required for ADAS recalibration (see Article 98). In 2026, a “cheap” repair is often viewed as a “dangerous” repair.
